Amidst the ongoing threats to Brazilian forests, mangroves, riparian forests and other protectors of our biomes, Filmambiente 2025 pays tribute to Mário Moscatelli for his tireless - and often solitary and dangerous - work restoring lagoon systems and mangroves in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
A biologist, master in ecology, and specialist in management and recovery of coastal ecosystems, Mario is responsible for the recovery of the mangroves of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas - which he began on his own, in his spare time, 36 years ago - the Fundão canal, Gramacho landfill, and the Jacarepaguá lagoon system, which he hopes to expand by 22 hectares of mangroves, increasing biodiversity, improving the quality of the water and air in the region and for its human and non-human residents. Rio de Janeiro can only be grateful!
