We are living in a period of profound global transformation, shaped by increasingly sharp political rivalries and the climate crisis\u2014a world where the rise of artificial intelligence and data infrastructures seeks to reshape and legitimize colonial structures.
It is a time of information overload and an extreme scarcity of context. Never before have so many films been produced, in so many places, covering such diverse themes.
In this context, curation must\u2014now more than ever\u2014ensure a balance between creative expression, mediation, and the construction of meaning during the selection process.
Far beyond the mere selection of titles, Filmambiente\u2019s curation aims to build a narrative that connects works, audiences, and contemporary issues, creating an experience that sparks reflection, dialogue, and transformation.
This approach rests on three fundamental pillars: an expert perspective, honed through extensive experience with cinema from diverse countries and eras; deep knowledge of the festival\u2019s target community; and a clear socio-political vision, capable of articulating the themes that mobilize\u2014or need to mobilize\u2014the world, the local territory, and the audience.
Rather than simply asking \"which films to screen,\" we seek to answer \"what we want to provoke through this selection.\" It is from this convergence of the curator\u2019s vision, community interests, and contemporary debates that a relevant, powerful program capable of generating cultural impact emerges.
The curatorial process has also kept pace with the transformations in documentary filmmaking and contemporary audiovisual production. While films focused on expos\u00e9 and exposition once predominated, character-driven narratives with a decolonial perspective are now gaining momentum\u2014human stories and individual experiences that bring major environmental, social, and cultural issues closer to people's everyday lives.
Issues such as climate change, ocean pollution, the predatory exploitation of natural resources, the legacies of colonialism, migration, and socio-environmental justice permeate Brazilian and international audiovisual production, engaging directly with global challenges\u2014 the dynamics between the Global North and South, and the tension between neocolonial and decolonial perspectives.
Filmambiente brings these diverse perspectives together in a program that encourages new ways of understanding the present and imagining the future.
Curating is about creating connections and correlations. It involves discovering unexpected links between films, ideas, territories, and people. It means transforming a vast amount of content into a coherent, accessible, and meaningful experience for the audience. There is no set formula; each year brings a fresh perspective\u2014built upon a myriad of new films from diverse origins (both from within Brazil and around the world)\u2014to identify shared thematic relevance, identity, and connections in a consistent and coherent manner.
In a world saturated with information, audiences no longer seek quantity; they seek relevance. They look for reliable references, well-structured narratives, and experiences that resonate. This is precisely the festival's goal: to act as an intelligent filter, offering a carefully crafted program that expands horizons, stimulates critical thinking, and strengthens the bond between cinema, culture, and society.
