class=\"ekit-team-modal-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFilmmaker, photographer and reporter, born in S\u00e3o Paulo in 1942. He studied at the University of Bras\u00edlia (1964-65) and at the Ulm School of Design in Germany. He photographed numerous feature films between 1968 and 1974 before making his directorial debut in 1971 with Caminhos de Valderez, which he co-directed with Hermano Penna. His first feature film, Iracema: uma transa amaz\u00f4nica (1974), co-directed with Orlando Senna, was censored in Brazil until 1981. After Iracema, he directed numerous television series and films, such as Gitirana (1975, also with Orlando Senna), Jari (1979, co-directed with Wolf Gauer), Era uma vez Iracema (2005) and Amaz\u00f4nia, a nova Minamata? She holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from UFPA and a degree in Communication from Unama. She is a documentary filmmaker and a PhD candidate in post-colonialism at the University of Coimbra, where she conducts research on imperialism, eugenics and development. She has filmed in all conflict zones in the Brazilian Amazon. She is the coordinator of the Escola Livre de Cinema da Amaz\u00f4nia, a project that provides free education to independent producers and university students in northern Brazil. She was a music producer for over 10 years. She was named one of DOC NYC\u2019s 2024 40 Under 40 Filmmakers to Watch, a 2023 Adobe x Sundance Woman to Watch, and co-founded Breaktide, an all-women-of-color video production company that has created campaigns for clients like Nike, LinkedIn and THINX. Jalena\u2019s first feature-length documentary \u201cStanding Above the Clouds\u201d premiered at HotDocs in 2024 where it won Best Social Impact Documentary and the Best Cinematography Award at the 13th He has made fourteen short films (Eu Queria Ser Um Monstro, Engolervilha, O An\u00e3o Que Virou Gigante, At\u00e9 a China, and others) and has participated in over three hundred animations for advertising, TV, and cinema. He was the founding president of ABCA (Brazilian Association of Animated Cinema), a professor in the postgraduate course in animation at PUC (Catholic University in Rio) for seven years, and since 2003 he has been one of the coordinators of the International Animation Day and managing partner of the production company Mar\u00e3o Desenhos Animados. His short films have been selected for 691 film festivals in over forty countries and have received 131 awards. Mar\u00e3o was honored at the 20th Anima Mundi and has also received retrospectives at the festivals Baixada Animada, Iguacine, Animanima (Serbia), ReAnimania (Armenia), Anima BR (Angola), and Animage (PE). She directed and animated \u201cGuida\u201d, an animated film that has won over 70 awards and participated in national and international festivals, including Animamundi,  Annecy Int FF and Havana Int FF..
